Young Promise International Music Competition Rules

Eligibility

Competition is open to musicians of all nationalities from ages 6 to 17 in four categories: piano, strings, ensemble and composition. First prize winners of the 2009 Competition are not eligible to compete in the same division they competed in 2009.

Competition Divisions

Division 1: ages 6-8
Division 2: ages 9-11
Division 3: ages 12-14
Division 4: ages 15-17

 

Contestants will be assigned the competition division based on their age at the time of the competition.

Prizes

  • The Competition will offer $3000 in prize money.
  • Winners of the competition will be invited to record CD's with the Bristol Chamber Orchestra.
  • All participants will be awarded certificates of participation.
  • 1st and 2nd Prize winners will receive special trophies and a cash prize
  • 3rd Prize winners - diplomas and medals.
  • Teachers of the winners will be presented with certificates.
  • A Shchedrin Award will be awarded for the best performance of a composition by Shchedrin.

All decisions of the Contestant Selection Jury and the Competition Jury will be final.

Competition Repertoire Requirements

2 pieces from different periods including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th to 21st century. Concerto movements are also allowed. Shchedrin category performers are only required to perform one piece. All solo performances must be performed by memory. Memorization is not a requirement for ensemble competitions. Contestants must bring an original copy of music they perform. Photocopies will not be allowed.

Application Procedures and Rules

The competition consists of two rounds:

First Round (Extended deadline is April 15th, 2010):

Instrumental Competition. Instrumental contestants must submit a CD or DVD with the recording of two pieces from different periods. Alternatively, contestants may submit links to YouTube videos. Contestants must record 2 (two) pieces from different periods including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th to 21st century. For the round, contestants should only record one-movement pieces or one movement of a concerto.

Shchedrin category performers are only required to perform one piece.

 

Composition Competition. Composition contestants must submit their score by mail or email (PDF format) before the deadline. While it is not required, it is recommended that a realization, i.e., midi performance/piano reduction performance on either CD/DVD/YouTube be included with the score.

 

All applications and CD/DVD/YouTube must be received before extended deadline of April 15th, 2010 .

 

1. Applicants may apply online or download and fill out an application. Application fee may be paid online or by check or money order. No application is complete and will not be accepted until an application fee has been received (see Fees).

2. CD/DVD must be accompanied by a DVD/CD/YouTube Form. Select Submission Format "DVD/CD", fill out the rest of the form, print it out and send with your DVD/CD.

3. Links to YouTube videos may be submitted by selecting Submission Format "YouTube" in DVD/CD/YouTube Form or by email to competition@a-musetheworld.org. If sending by email please include the following info:

a. Name of the contestant(s)

b. Contestant(s) DOB

c. Competition category ( piano, violin, etc)

d. Name of the composer and a full title of each piece.

d. Links to the performaces of each piece.

 

The finalists from all entries received will be chosen by a professional selection panel to compete in the Final Round of the Competition. All finalists will be notified before or on April 5th, 2010 and must formally accept an invitation to compete before April 15th, 2010 by replying to an invitation email from Young Promise International Music Competition.

Final round (June 5th and 6th 2010).

Repertoire Requirements: Finalists invited to perform live must perform two pieces from different periods of the contestant’s choice, as in the first recorded round. Performers may choose to repeat their taped repertoire, or they may choose new pieces.


Division 1 and 2 contestantsprepare one movement works. Concerto or sonata movements are allowed.

 

Division 3 and 4 contestants must be prepared to perform at least one complete piece such as a concerto consisting of 3 movements. For the second piece, they may choose a single movement work from a different period. Judges may ask them to perform a movement of their (the contestant's) choice or may request a specific movement to be performed.

 

Finalists wil lbe assigned a time and order of performance. The Winners Concert and Award Ceremony will be held on June 6th. At the time of competition contestants must present a valid copy of a passport or a birth certificate.

 

All solo performances must be performed by memory. Memorization is not a requirement for ensemble competitions. Contestants must bring an original copy of music they perform. Photocopies will not be allowed.

 

All decisions of the Competition Jury are final.

Fees

  • $85 non-refundable application fee
  • If requested on the application form, an accompanist for the final round will be provided by the Competition for an additional $55.00.

The competition accepts only checks from a US bank. Payment can securely be made with a credit card through Paypal.

Foreign Contestants

All fees must be paid in the US dollars.
Please consult your nearest American Embassy for advice on visas.
The Competition will send you an official letter of invitation.
